This page is about the recording of Title, also known as the Really Long Song. The Really Long Song was a legendary thread on the Elitist Superstructure of DQN, where anonymous posters made up lyrics of a really long song, according to instructions posted in the first post.

We are going to record Title as an album of songs by various artists, every verse as a separate song, then we are going to distribute the album.

Anyone may participate in the project. You do not need to be a regular at DQN, or even have any sort of artistic talent.

If you wish to record something but are not comfortable with editing the wiki yourself, please use this thread to reserve your verse and to distribute it - someone else can edit the wiki for you.

Note that that the Wikichan version and the actual thread are slightly different. In the wikichan version, the empty posts are mentioned by their caption (i.e. 705 Name: ⊂二二二( ^ω^)二二二⊃ : 1993-09-4742 02:04). I left out the empty posts.

I'm gonna use a different name for each track I make to maximize the DQN level of my participation. This one is released as "Double-Barrelled Gunman" for obvious reasons.

>>926-975 Eighteenth verse.

RECORDED by I am a proud member of the Elitist Superstructure of DQN as THRILLHO on 14:26, 10 November 2007 (PST). [22]

Note: the low quality (48kbps) encode is intentional, it's used as a kind of effect to have slight artifacts and overall mangling, so there won't be a higher quality version.

My version sucks. If someone re-do it before the last 3 verses are done, his version will take priority. —IAAPMOTESOD 11:00, 11 June 2008 (PDT)

>>52-66 Chorus (with occasional, repeated shouts of 'lol internet').

RECORDED by I am a proud member of the Elitist Superstructure of DQN, using the throw, as VIPPER vs. ⊂二二二( ^ω^)二二二⊃ on 16:55, 15 January 2008 (PST) - [29]

I think that when we distribute it, we could name this part 'Chorus (with occasional, repeated shouts of "lol internet")' instead of 'Chorus (with occasional, repeated shouts of >>1000)', it makes more sense. Also are you OK to go with the modhack version of >>1000? Technically I'd say it's the official one since it's the one in the thread. I am a proud member of the Elitist Superstructure of DQN 01:56, 21 October 2007 (PDT)
Nobody complained so I did both. I am a proud member of the Elitist Superstructure of DQN 16:55, 15 January 2008 (PST)

RECORDED by DQN ALL-STARS on 16:31, 5 February 2008 (PST) [30]

Miscellaneous notes

Volume

Somebody should Normalize every track at the same volume for the album.

So far, everyone has distributed only MP3, so it would involve having everyone send the original files to the one responsible for that... Since the album is a compilation of various artists of various skill of various styles, I think it's OK to have differences in volume... but it's true that some of the songs could really use a v2.
We sure need at least to make sure that the album flows right. For example the 8th verse, which has like 10dB of headroom! After the 7th, the intro has no presence, and the 9th verse attacks with a loud drum part. —IAAPMOTESOD 15:09, 1 February 2008 (PST)
Ok, working on a V2. *Done.*

Opinions about the usage of names

There are many opinions regarding the usage of names right now. How do you feel about the issue? I don't care one way or another, but I think that if some guys want to use names, then everyone should make up one so we don't end up with a weird tracklist with only a few tracks credited to someone. (But OTOH remember that all the music is supposed come only from DQN-Kun) I am a proud member of the Elitist Superstructure of DQN 00:53, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

If anyone is looking for a name to attribute a song to, there's a fairly comprehensive list here. A couple of these are already in use, so double check first.

Keep the original files!

We should keep all our original files, or at the very least, the non-compressed mixdown. We may get some nice ideas, change our mind about some stuff, want to have a standard encode, or whatever... so keeping these files may be useful. I am a proud member of the Elitist Superstructure of DQN 22:26, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Resources for people who can't sing

If you can't or don't want to record yourself, you can use speech synth.

Web-based speech-synth tools

OS X speech synth

Configure the voice in System Preferences > Speech, then run the following script in Script Editor:

say "Under The Moon Loli To Issho" saving to "Users:Your_name_here:Desktop:speech.aiff"

You can use http://vox-machina.net/ to get OS X voices, but you can't configure the speed.

The 7th verse uses many different OS X voices.

Vocaloid 2: Hatsune Miku

Don't forget the leek.

See the project thread, there are a few useful posts about getting it to work.

The best example here is the 12th verse

Virtual Singer

Virtual Singer is used in the 6th verse, but it's hard to get it to sound intelligible.

Use a vocoder

You can use a vocoder to cover up a shitty voice. Example in 14th verse.

Release standards

OK, we're probably only a couple months away from release, so let's start thinking about this.

First, we'll need to re-tag everything before release. The following is in part my original proposition, but what is in boldface is the consensus we seem to have reached (or is so damn obvious that nobody would contest, like the fact the album name is 'Title').

And as for the filename:

Number - Artist name - Verse (spelled out).mp3

Example: 22 - THRILLHO - Eighteenth verse.mp3

(Since we have SJIS art in artist name, there's no point being shitty-system-friendly by using underscores instead of spaces, right?)

Splitting on 2 discs

I don't see a point in splitting this up onto multiple "discs" as it's downloaded to begin with. There's no physical product, and my guess is most people will be listening to this on their computer or an ipod or something. Who actually uses CDs anymore?
However, if we do split it into disc-length chunks, I strongly recommend denoting this with a three digit track number (e.g. 204, for track 4 of disc 2) rather than with the ID3 "disc number" field. Some not-so-smart players ignore it and all the tracks end up in the wrong order. We can still use it -- but don't expect players to care what it says.
That would just be part of the joke, I thought. But maybe it was a bad idea if it can cause issues for listeners.
It's fine, and it might be funny to split it onto two "discs" so that the first part is just barely too long to fit on an actual CD.

Genre field

IMO the genre field should be flexible. This worked well for DQN Electronics #9, and "DQN" isn't DQN enough.
If we're going this route, should we stick with existing genres label (some programs impose a list) or use whatever we feel like?
Leave it up to the individual artists?
It'd be nice to know if there's some sort of comatibility issue to be aware of. For example, in iTunes, that would add junk to the 'browse by genre' view, but I guess people who actually use it tend to re-tag their stuff. Anyway, if we don't impose a genre, I'll change the genre I have set for my songs (Right now it's 'DQN' in all of them) I am a proud member of the Elitist Superstructure of DQN
Well, I've just checked: every song already either uses 'DQN', nothing, or 'Blues' as the genre, and 'Blues' is only used by ⊂二二二( ^ω^)二二二⊃ , probably because it's a default (UPDATE: confirmed) - so I think we may still be better off using DQN everywhere.

Character encoding issues

ぬるぽ! here. That tag was written with a tag editor that conforms to the ID3 spec. What MP3 player are you using?
iTunes 7.6 OS X 10.5.1, it appears as "㙬ã≠—ã™∏ïπ™". Also, the finder interprets it differently: Image:4th verse in finder.jpg - I generally don't have a problem with most songs with non-latin characters I acquire. I hope we can figure out a way to make it work everywhere. I am a proud member of the Elitist Superstructure of DQN 21:43, 25 January 2008 (PST)
I'll put together a test suite with a bunch of different ID3 tag versions and character encodings so we can figure out what works best. (Huh. Who would guess that something actually useful could come from DQN. ;)
Hey, are you implying that all that quality music won't satisfy a real need from listeners? (Well, at least it gave me an excuse to try out many weird techniques and fun toys) —IAAPMOTESOD
On a side note does anyone here know what MP3 players are most commonly used in Japan?

Who will do what

I volunteer to apply proper, uniform tags to each file, including cover art and all kinds of other whacky ID3 nonsense if we so choose: embedded lyrics, URL fields linking to the relevant posts in the thread, various other obscurities, etc. Although, the ID3 spec sucks and a lot of apps don't read tags with alternate charsets correctly. (Side note: What shitty systems don't support spaces in filenames in this day and age?!)
We're definitely not gonna drop the weird unicode characters from the artist names, so there's nothing we can do, I think.
Right with you. My ID3 tags work for me, but I don't know if some programs might have trouble with them. (mostly Windows apps, in particular WMP and Winamp -- and I don't really have very high expectations of either)
I'll make a test file to make sure they work with the popular players.
I kinda remember that album art embedded with itunes doesn't work anywhere else (not really sure, I ran into that issue long ago). Whoever packs the relases will have to make sure it works.
... oh and don't use iTunes to tag files.
Also, I can provide hosting for all of this, and can assemble and seed a torrent for it as well. (All I require is that the product must be truly DQN quality, no imitations accepted.)
That'd be nice, I wasn't sure I could do it without screwing up some MP3 tagging or torrenting issue if I were to be the one doing it. I am a proud member of the Elitist Superstructure of DQN
I remember seeing a post somewhere about designing the cover art. It had something to do with a loli and moon and mittens... but can't find the post again.

Psht quality. Just slap a "4.0" tag on it and get it outta the door, that's what all the cool projects do! (Sorry, could not resist.)
I can also offer direct-download hosting for the completed project. -anon

Cover artwork

Here's my album cover proposition. I'm sure someone can do better. Ask me to upload the PSD if you want to take some stuff from it (not gonna upload a 43MB file unless requested) :

(Downscaled, click for enlargement.)

Also, if we're gonna use this one, what name do you want to use?

Would something like this be better?

Cool, now the back cover of the album will have to be updated when every track will be posted.
lol no

The last 5 parts

We're still awaiting a status update from the people who reserved the last 5 parts to confirm they didn't forget. See [31] (the usual thread).

We had an update from 66 (10th and 17th) and User:93rdk (bridge 2), but nothing from User:( ゚ ヮ゚) (13th and 15th). I annoyed people about it on /dqn/, /music/, iiichan, and his talk page, since about 10 days. Unfortunately he hasn't set up an e-mail address or isn't allowing others to send him mail in his wiki profile. If there's no reply in a week, I'll mark his verses as available again. —IAAPMOTESOD 18:26, 29 February 2008 (PST)

Update: A new person has reserved 15 and verse 13 has been recorded by somebody else.

The last 3 parts

>>66 (4th, 7th, 10th, 17th) has confirmed he's still on the 10th and 17th [32]

We're still waiting for a word of 93rdk (Bridge 2). If he desists, >>87 (3rd, 1st encore 1) or Extreme DANNIS * the nutloaders * (13th) may want to take it. —IAAPMOTESOD 06:24, 5 May 2008 (PDT)

Still on it.

The last 2 parts (lol)

>>66 didn't reply in ages. We can't wait forever so I've done both and I'm preparing the release. —IAAPMOTESOD 08:20, 30 July 2008 (PDT)
